Grain-boundary sliding
WebGrain boundary sliding is a plastic deformation mechanism where crystals can slide past each other without friction and without creating significant voids as a result of diffusion. [2] The deformation process associated with this mechanism is referred to as granular flow. [8] Webbook [21]. Such mechanisms—interfacial sliding, grain boundary diffusional creep and rotational deformation— effectively operate in nanocrystalline solids, first of all, due to the presence of a very large number of grain boundaries [19–21]. In the context discussed, it is natural to think that these specific deformation mechanisms can

GB sliding, sometimes coupled with GB migration, can strongly affect the inelastic deformation … Grain boundary sliding (GBS) is a material deformation mechanism where grains slide against each other. This occurs in polycrystalline material under external stress at high homologous temperature (above ~0.4 ) and low strain rate and is intertwined with creep. Homologous temperature describes the operating … See more Rachinger sliding is purely elastic; the grains retain most of their original shape. WebAnother way in which vacancies can move is along the grain boundaries, a mechanism called Coble creep. When a crystal deforms by diffusion creep to accommodate space problems from simultaneous grain boundary sliding (the movement of whole grains along grain boundaries) this is called granular or superplastic flow.
